Will I Need a Liquor Special Occasion Permit?

A liquor Special Occasion Permit (SOP) may be required for you to serve alcohol to your guests.   Permits are issued to the event's host by select LCBO stores nearest to where the event is to occur.

Vanek Whiskey Events can help you determine if an SOP is required and can assist you with the application process.

RESOURCES:  Risk Management Strategy

Vanek Whiskey Events is in the business of sharing our appreciation of the fascinating and enjoyable world of whiskey with you and your guests.  The last thing that we want is for anyone to be harmed as a result of someone attending one of our events.

While there is a certain level of risk associated with any event that involves the consumption of alcohol, in order to provide the greatest assurance of safety, Vanek Whiskey Events has developed a layered risk reduction approach.  This approach involves all parties associated with one of our events, including you the client, your guests and of course, Vanek Whiskey Events.

Our layered risk reduction strategy consists of:

Education

Advising participants of the alcohol by volume (AVB) of the whiskeys being sampled, reminding participants of Ontario's drinking and driving laws and making available a breathalyser for participant piece-of-mind.

Attendee Waiver

All participants will be required to sign a waiver confirming that they are of legal drinking age in the province of Ontario, that they are aware of the impact alcohol has on personal judgement and that the safest way to return home from an event in which alcohol is consumed by them is to not drive.

Host Liability Insurance

We recommend that clients investigate the purchase of host liability insurance for your event.

Moderation

Whiskey portions are controlled and measured to provide a consistent quantity of alcohol provided to each participant.  Anyone visiably intoxicated during a tasting will not be served.

Food

We strongly recommend the serving of a meal in conjunction with one of our events and during the tasting portion itself, as it helps to moderate the absorption of alcohol into the blood stream slowing its affect.

Time

Our whiskey tastings take place at the front end of a 2 to 4 hour event, giving maximum time for alcohol metabolization before guests depart.
