What's in a Name?

The word "whisky" comes from the Gaelic uisge beatha (pronounced ooshky-bay) meaning 'water of life', with even earlier roots in the Old Irish words uisce and beothu, from around 900 AD.

Evolving from the original uisge (ooshky) the word was anglicized over time to uiskie in 1618, to whiskie in 1715, to usky in 1736, and finally to whisky in 1746.

"Always carry a flagon of whiskey in case of snake bite and furthermore always carry a small snake."
W. C. Fields

"I like my whisky old and my women young."
Errol Flynn
